The Heartbreaking Text That Left Me Sobbing in a Parking Lot (And the Lesson I Learned)

Five years ago, I received an unexpected text that shattered me: an old friend had passed away from cancer.

She was one of my closest friends in high school, but as often happens, life got in the way. We hadn’t spoken to each other in 8 years until one day, while packing my living room for a renovation, I found a book she had gifted me. Her inscription led me to text her old number, and she replied.

We exchanged messages over weeks, catching up. She mentioned she was undergoing cancer treatment, and we made plans to meet once I finished a strict work deadline. And then life got busy with moving back into our renovated house.

When I finally reached out to arrange that meeting, she didn’t reply. The next morning, I had a text from her number: “Hi Isa, I’m sorry to tell you your friend died two weeks ago,” her husband wrote.

I was devastated. For months, nothing made sense.

Until it eventually did.

That book fell into my hands when it needed to. Though we never met again, I was there for her final months, sharing memories and appreciation for each other.

Maybe that was the whole point.

The irony was that while I was busy making plans for “someday,” time was silently slipping away.

What about you? Where in your life are you waiting to do something or reach out to someone? We all assume we have time. The truth is, sometimes we don’t.

Make that call.
Send that message.
Reach out to that person.

Today.
