‘No tool or treatment can replace compassion.’ Here’s how I see this truth come to life every day in healthcare.
Every year, I have the privilege of teaching healthcare professionals who are eager to improve their communication skills. These are brilliant, dedicated professionals who spend their days balancing the immense pressures of patient care with their own emotional resilience.
One story from last year stands out to me:
We were talking about what happens in those intense, high-pressure situations—when emotions run high, and compassion feels like the first thing to slip. I asked the group:
What does compassion look like when you’re under stress?
One nurse said: “It’s the extra moment you take to say, ‘I’m here for you,’ even when your schedule is packed.”
Another added: “It’s how we speak to each other, especially when emotions are running high.”
By the end of the session, something shifted. They didn’t just walk away with tools for better conversations; they left with a renewed commitment to lead with compassion, not just for their patients but for their colleagues and themselves.
Yesterday was World Compassion Day, and it’s the perfect reminder to celebrate healthcare professionals who continue to show compassion, even under immense challenges.
To healthcare leaders reading this:
. How are you supporting your teams in practicing compassion under pressure?
. What tools or strategies could help them navigate difficult situations with care?
I’d love to hear from all of you: What does compassion in healthcare mean to you?
