In leadership, especially when we’re really good at what we do, the urge to fix things for others can be strong. It’s so tempting to jump in, solve the problem, and move on.
But here’s the catch: when we do this too often, we may be robbing our team of the opportunity to grow and develop.
I had a coaching session recently with a client who’s a super expert in their field. They’re quick to spot issues and immediately step in with solutions—and they’re amazing at it!! But as we dug deeper, they realized something important:
By fixing everything, they were preventing their team from learning how to solve problems on their own. They were withholding the growth opportunities their team needed to thrive.
In that moment, they understood that being a fixer wasn’t exactly an act of kindness—it was actually a disservice to their team.
True compassion in leadership is not about swooping in to save the day. It’s about guiding your team to discover solutions, learn from their mistakes, and grow. The real work is in listening deeply, asking the right questions, and giving them the space to find their own way.
What’s a time you realized that your urge to fix might have been holding your team back?
