In a time where our screens and hearts are saturated with harrowing images and news, it’s almost inevitable to feel overwhelmed, angered, and helpless. However, now, more than ever, we need to ground ourselves in the values of mutual understanding, empathy, and most critically, compassion.
Being continually exposed to images of suffering can deeply affect our mental wellbeing. This emotional toll, often referred to as ‘compassion fatigue’, can spiral into despair, profound sadness, and a sense of powerlessness.
Empathy is our ability to understand what others are feeling. However, when continually exposed to the suffering of others, empathy, if not balanced, can become draining. Enter self-compassion. Self-compassion means treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding we would offer a dear friend.
Here goes some strategies that can help us navigate these difficult times:
- I don’t mean we should disconnect from what’s happening in the world, but 24/7 news consumption can be detrimental. Set specific times to check updates and avoid sensationalist outlets.
- Dedicate a few minutes each day to meditation or breathing exercises. These practices can help ground you, bringing clarity and inner peace.
- Talk to someone you trust about your feelings. Sharing our concerns and fears can be a significant relief valve.
- Instead of feeling powerless, think of ways to contribute positively, whether it’s through donations to humanitarian organizations, attending peace vigils, or merely educating yourself further about the conflict.
- Ensure you’re taking care of yourself. Exercise, healthy eating, and adequate rest are paramount, especially in stressful times.
- Spend quality time with the ones you love. Yup. Hug them. Every day.
- Remember, each individual around you is also processing the news in their way. A simple act of kindness, a listening ear, or a gentle word can make a world of difference.
Do you already practice self-compassion during tough times? If so, which strategies do you turn to? Share them below, so we can all learn from each other.
P.S.: If you find yourself particularly impacted by the news and need additional support, please consider seeking professional help. Taking care of our mental health is as pivotal as caring for our physical well-being. Stay safe, courageous, and kind.
